4th year students at auto recyclers conference

Our fourth year group of students attended the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association (OARA) Annual Meeting and Trade Show on March 27, 2015 in Markham.  To the members and vendors they presented.

From the students' report:

Responsible Stewardship of Electrified Vehicles

Responsible Stewardship of Electrified Vehicles
Electrified vehicles (EVs), including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully-electric vehicles, have seen substantial sales growth in recent years. Significant uncertainty remains around the magnitude and timing of future EV battery waste flows, and the batteries are potentially hazardous.

The group identified best practices for auto recyclers

  • Track as much information as possible
  • Keep labels and other identifiers legible
  • Dealers should maintain vehicle records tied to the VIN
  • Dealers may be able to test battery SOH·         Recyclers should value and segregate batteries according to SOH and chemistry
  • Recyclers should be aware that batteries undergo ‘calendar aging’ – degradation from the passage of time – as well as from temperature extremes
Much thanks to the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association (OARA) and the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) for support, and access to people and the event.
