Communications and Research Opportunities in Green Transportation with the University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT)

UWAFT is looking for a Communications Manager. More specifically, someone interested in taking advantage of the unique opportunities offered by EcoCAR 3 and UWAFT to work with the public, governments, and industry in an effort to move society towards a sustainable transportation future. EcoCAR 3 is an elite student team competition that provides students with unparalleled training and career opportunities in the fields of engineering, communications, and business. For a student who can leverage the Communications Manager efforts/data/experiences into a thesis topic, a research stipend is available.

UWAFT Background

The University of Waterloo's Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT) has been a world leader in advanced vehicle technology development, education, and awareness for nearly 20 years. Our mission is to develop and integrate ground breaking technology into production road vehicles while promoting sustainable transport through the community at large. UWAFT has worked with a plethora of technologies over the years including Ethanol, Propane, Hydrogen and Electricity as energy sources. In 2008 UWAFT demonstrated the world`s first student designed and built fuel cell vehicle to pass on-road safety and competively engaged in all GM Proving Grounds tests (e.g., range, acceleration, braking, towing, lateral acceleration, emissions, handling).

EcoCAR 3 Background

EcoCAR 3 is a new four-year Advanced Vehicle Technologies Competition (AVTC) that begins September, 2014. UWAFT is one of only 16 teams that has been selected from over three hundred possible applicant universities from across North America to compete in EcoCAR 3, and is the only Canadian team to be accepted into all four of AVTCs over the past decade (Challenge X, EcoCAR, EcoCAR 2, and now EcoCAR 3). For EcoCAR 3, UWAFT will be redesigning a Chevrolet Camaro to be either an electric (EV) or plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicle. EcoCAR 3 has a strong communications requirement in addition to its engineering, consumer, and business requirements.

Communications Manager Background

The communications manager will work closely with the business/project manager to oversee a group of undergraduate team leads. The aim is to effectively manage a team of students to successfully accomplish EcoCAR 3 competition communication deliverables, while also promoting and improving the UWAFT team at UW and WLU.
